Inner City—Guided Reading Group

Honouring the legacy of C.G. Jung and Marie-Louise von Franz, and many notable Jungians around the world, such as Daryl Sharp, Marion Woodman and J. Gary Sparks.

Title:

Carl Jung and Arnold Toynbee. The Social Meaning of Inner Work.

J. Gary Sparks

From the back cover:

C. G. Jung was arguably the most visionary psychologist of the twentieth century, and A. J. Toynbee the most celebrated historian of his generation. This book explores what they have in common.

Before I dive into Toynbee’s ideas and their connection to Jung’s late reflections, I will present an overview of both Toynbee’s and Jung’s lives, paying attention to how the same events shaped both men’s work in a very similar vein, expressed at points in a comparable vernacular, at points from a different, yet related, perspective.

In any case, the convergence of their understanding is not well known, though its pertinence to civilized life is to my mind utterly indispensable — far too essential to linger fallow in obscurity.

.

Don’t be fooled by the cover! The content of this book is highly stimulating and relevant to our current times. I find it an appropriate reading selection to re-launch the reading group, and a good introduction for those who feel drawn to Jung’s work in recent years.

Quotes from the book:

“At the center of a person’s and a society’s growth is continuing creativity.”

.

“Inner work, done at depth and with integrity, leads us back to the social world insofar as the problems we have addressed and made progress in solving in ourselves are also the problems ailing our times.”

.

“To my mind, the conviction that our inner inquiry and our contribution to the outer world are one and the same (that is, when the analytic process proceeds to the fullest) is the fruit of a new level of consciousness.”

About the reading group

I invite you to explore with me the insightful and relevant work of Jungian Analysts published by—but not limited to—Inner City Books. We will engage in meaningful conversations based on the premises of C.G. Jung’s work.

My artwork is the result of more than fifteen years of ongoing inner work. The demands that Soul has placed on me and the urge to create and grow from within, have found a way into the world through the images of my individuation process. The books of C.G. Jung as well as other Jungians have been a source of support and inspiration throughout my journey.

Now more than ever we need to relate to the unconscious and develop the emotional and psychological maturity that gives rise to a new consciousness that values and respects nature, supports the growth process of the individual and brings meaning to life.

Additional notes

We will spend six weeks on each book (six sessions). If you are not familiar with C.G. Jung’s work, I recommend that you acquire Jung Lexicon by Daryl Sharp from Inner City Books, in it you will find definitions of concepts from Analytical Psychology that will be of help during your reading experience.
